One of the things I frequently tell clients is that knowing what they don't like is as informative to us as knowing what they do like. While not completely analogous, I think of it even in the terms of creating some amount of tension, as in music, and bringing the experience back into a major, comfortable chord from dischordance. Particularly when change is required, which is an essential element of any new or different activity, whether a web site or database or eFundraising effort, there is tension, sometimes confusion, but the piece needs to be absorbed as a whole composition. And it's often the dischord that brings back harmony. I've been relearning Moonlight Sonata, and I'm fascinated in particular by how in measure 52 Beethoven goes with a minor chord. I've played it about every way, and it just sounds absolutely correct with the measure before and the measure after. Those are the chords that strike me like a good myo fascial massage session - the stroke that literally, in both cases, makes the left side of my face scrunch up in discomfort, but anticipating a release. This is what organizational change entails, especially composed and orchestrated with someone you trust and are comfortable with, like your favorite composer, your favorite conductor. You know you will be led through the experience. And come out okay on the other side. |
