Movement Building PDF Print E-mail

In trying to explain why we're different in the way we choose projects and work with our clients, we're movement building with a corporation as the mechanism, rather than the end. Profitability as  a means to provide more value, rather than an end.

We are trying to build a global community of like minded individuals, with the shared central belief that there is enough to go around. That we don't need to be fighting all the time.

One of the key ways that tribes throughout the ages, individual primates even, had of interacting was through the trade of goods and services.

Controlling the mechanism by which that trade was recognized or mutually agreed to has been the problem. The invisible hand of the marketplace has never been invisible, and it generally comes wielding a club or a sword or a gun.

This article makes some good points about grammar, and some of the vagaries of writing for the Web.

The main piece that I would like our compatriots to remember is that good grammar is good grammar.

The common mistakes of web writing have much to do with the almost casual approach we take to writing emails.

Transparency and Value PDF Print E-mail

I think one of the hard things for people to grasp with the gift economy is that it simply shifts where the value of an exchange resides from scarcity to abundance.

Microsoft, for example, could still exist as a company - and it would do very well in open source - by adding value to what is accessible to all.

No single or group of individuals would become super wealthy, but there would be a lot of really comfortable people, doing very interesting things collaboratively.

And with clear conscience - not trying to manipulate or deceive, or mesmerize the limbic brain, but by presenting a clear case of what you offer to the benefit of that individual or organizational need.

I was just thinking today of the different start ups and organizations I've been involved with and what I've learned.

Here's a synopsis:

Working for Mrs. Chalkley -

Dream during dreaming time. Work during working time.

Antique Show Runner -

Often the payment for service rendered is directly connected to perceived value. That perceived value and the ensuing exchange are different for different people. Serve all with a smile. Entrepreneurship is all about finding and filling need.

Chores -

Time spent is time lost, and the task will remain.

Paper route -

Having structure that forces getting up in the morning leads to greater productivity.

Movie Theater -

Empower management to make individual decisions impacting employee loyalty on their own. Finding tasks makes the time pass.

Detassling -

Building team spirit requires making yourself part of the team. The strongest leadership is through service to the good of the group. Again, focusing the same amount of otherwise spent time doing a job to the BEST of your ability provides satisfaction.

Adequate Housing for America -

The flatter and more empowered an organization, the more ownership and sustainable success. Documenting processes is essential to power and longevity. Make learning moments part of every activity.

Mangia -

Part of any job interacting with the public is making them feel listened to, even if you have heard them. People have needs beyond food.
